Elbow Crutches
Elbow crutches are also called forearm crutches and they are mobility devices that help transfer weight from our lower limbs (legs) to our upper body. In doing so, it helps in reducing the weight applied to our legs when we walk, hence increasing our balance and stability.
Elbow crutches are used on long term basis in case of a long term injury and illness and are made of aluminum tube shaft with a modeled hand grip. They have a cuff that goes around the forearm and extends like 2 inches below the elbow.
How to use the elbow crutches
You insert your arm into the cuff then hold the grip; they therefore give more comfort by distributing your weight to your arms making it very convenient.
The cuff  could be a circle or half a circle made of either metal or plastic, with an opening (v-shaped) in the front which enables your forearm to slip out and release your hand without the crutches having to fall. It helps in mobility by giving you the support of a white cane with extended forearm support.
The hand grip support gives an opportunity to hold and rest your hand to help support your body weight. The forearm area helps you stay in balance, gives you lateral stability and helps reduce the load on your wrist.
Elbow crutches are of different height and weight capacities and both the leg and forearm are adjustable in both length and size to increase their portability during both physical therapy and physical rehabilitation depending on your needs and requirements.
